Project Overview
Shrouding the Heavens is a game adaptation of the bestselling xianxia novel by Chen Dong, built around immortal cultivation, sects, gods, artifacts, and cosmic mystery. For this project, HS+ provided English and Spanish localization across more than 200,000 Chinese characters, covering story, skills, UI, and promotional content. The goal was not only to translate the game, but to help global players understand and feel the logic of an Eastern fantasy universe with a dense original terminology system.
The Challenge
This project presented one of the hardest localization problems in fantasy content: how to preserve a highly original cultural system without making it unreadable to new audiences.
The main challenge came from:
- A large number of original cultivation-realm terms
- Techniques, artifacts, and cosmic concepts with no simple direct equivalent
- A mythic, literary tone that needed to stay intact
- The need to keep the gameplay text clear and usable for players in English and Spanish markets
If the language became too literal, the world would feel confusing. If it became too simplified, the xianxia identity would disappear. That balance was the core of the project.

Execution Approach
HS+ approached this project as a mythology-and-system translation challenge, not a normal fantasy localization task. The team built a dedicated terminology bible to map cultivation realms, techniques, artifacts, sect-related language, and cosmological concepts. Then the writing style was adjusted to preserve the mythic and literary tone of the source while still making progression, emotional stakes, and gameplay logic understandable in English and Spanish.
Results
The result was a bilingual localization that preserved the novel's xianxia identity while improving readability and usability for international players. The game's world remained rich and literary, but the systems became clearer to follow in English and Spanish.
